Fund founder and chairman Carmen Mauriello Jr. says goodbye to the Mozambican children he assisted during his Peace Corps service. |
The Mozambique Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides scholarships enabling individuals in the southern African country of Mozambique to attain secondary or university schooling. These educational opportunities empower students to make significant contributions to their communities and country. Through the generosity of individual donors, our organization has been able to provide scholarships based on need and merit to several Mozambican students since our founding in 2008. While serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique, Carmen J. Mauriello Jr. observed that access to education was a major problem throughout the country. He founded the Fund to provide opportunities to bright and driven Mozambican students. The Fund began with two applicants, Sulsa Ozobra and Ancha Saide Cassimo, who were awarded scholarships to begin their university studies in Mozambique. Both Sulsa and Ancha demonstrated academic excellence, strong community involvement in activities ranging from HIV/AIDS education to female empowerment, as well as a deep desire to continue their studies in order to affect change in their communities. In 2009, the Fund extended scholarships to two additional applicants, Moises Chiungo, and his younger brother, Manuel Chiungo. In 2011, we began aiding David João António Charles. Through a partnership with the Maputo-based Machaka Scholarship Project, eight more students were able to continue their educations in 2011.
As tuition costs mount, there is a vital need for continuing donations to make these scholarships sustainable and to help even more Mozambican students in the future. Click on the "Donations" link to learn more about contributing to this life-changing fund. |
