NEWS
We have some very exciting news to share: The first Mozambique Scholarship Fund recipient, Sulsa Ozobra, has graduated from university and has begun providing valuable services to the rural populations of his country.

Sulsa earned a Bachelor’s degree in veterinary studies from Eduardo Mondlane University in Inhambane on April 18, 2011. Since graduating, Sulsa has become head of veterinary services in the district of Govouro in the Inhambane Province. In this position, he is tasked with preventing disease outbreaks among rural livestock; he conducts testing and vaccinations and advises small farmers regarding animal safety.

Completing a university degree multiplies Sulsa's ability to be a productive member of his society. He will have opportunities to contribute to his community in ways he could not have hoped to without this opportunity. Sulsa is extremely grateful to all those who have helped him to achieve his dreams.

UPDATES
Our newest scholarship recipient, David João António Charles, currently ranks second out of the 50 students in his Education Administration and Management program at Universidade Pedagógica de Mozambique (Teachers College of Mozambique) in Montepuez. He is currently wrapping up his first year of college.

Moises Chiungo is excelling in the first year of his pre-engineering course at the Instituto Comercial e Industrial da Beira (Commercial and Industrial Institute of Beira), a competitive high-school-level institute. Moises currently ranks sixth of the 51 students in his program.

Ancha Saide Cassimo is continuing her accounting program at the Escola Superior de Economia e Gestão de Chimoio (Higher Education Institute of Economics and Management of Chimoio) and is on track to graduate in 2012. Her program has afforded her opportunities to intern at an accounting firm in Chimoio and travel to a neighboring province for a practicum with a government agency.

Manuel Chiungo, Moises’ younger brother, is performing well in his tenth grade year at the Escola Comercial Joaquim Marra de Chimoio (Joaquim Marra Commercial School of Chimoio). He is set to begin a pre-university course in January.

The partnership we formed this year with the Machaka Scholarship Project is also bearing fruit. Machaka is a Maputo-based organization of Mozambican youth who strive to preserve Mozambican culture by performing traditional dance and music. Through this partnership, eight Machaka members resumed their high school studies last January and all have achieved positive results.

This past year (2011) has been a very exciting one for us, as we’re starting to witness just how transformative these educational opportunities can be, both for our scholarship recipients and their communities. We need your support to sustain this important work. Please visit the About Us and Donations pages to learn more about MozFund and how you can help.

Africa's challenges are complex, but one of the solutions is obvious: education. Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Carmen Mauriello Jr. founded the non-profit Mozambique Scholarship Fund in 2008 in the hope of providing opportunities to the talented and motivated students of this southern African country. Thanks to the generosity of individual donors, the Fund is helping several Mozambican further their education, realize their dreams, and develop their communities and country.

As they say in Africa, it takes a village. For our scholarship recipients, we are that village - a global village of supporters who can propel these motivated Mozambicans to improve the quality of life in their communities and country. We thank you for considering a donation to The Mozambique Scholarship Fund!
